Cyclone Rep presents the Othello Session Online: The Colour of Skin
The Colour of Skin begins in the U.S. with the Black Lives Matter Movement reaching fever pitch. Othello thinks this is a movement that doesn’t affect him due to his high status in the military and because he is a light skinned Mauritanian. However, FIX news, emboldened by a jealous Iago, doesn’t share this view. They join forces to malign Othello’s character, aiming to cast doubt on his fitness to lead and for daring to love a white woman.
Cyclone Rep gives Othello a modern context that focuses on the theme of racism, in light of the Black Lives Matter Movement, to create a relevant and thought-provoking production for secondary school students. Other key themes and topics, such as Jealousy, Appearance vs. Reality, Manipulation, Gender, Xenophobia, Self-hatred, Dramatic Irony, The Handkerchief, and Animal Imagery, will be reviewed to help learners prepare for the Leaving Certificate English paper.
